Weightlessness...
Once the moonship blasts off into orbit, something amazing happens, and that is weightlessness.
For us, its commonplace to imagine it. In 1954? How many adults and kids alike looked at this exact picture in Collier's and in Conquest of the Moon with a sense of fascination?
A martini glass?!? Plyers and other non-fixtures float in front of the window in silence... and through the window, the crew is beholden to the cosmic orb from which they came.
In real life, astronaut Anders on Apollo VIII photographed Earthrise, on just such a trip to the Moon, the photo that changed the way earthlings see their home planet. But that was 15 years later... |
