An American station...

Had the Cold War not ended (R.I.P. 1989-91), it is quite possible an American space station would have been constructed instead of the current I.S.S. It had operational names like Freedom, but nothing of the sort was realized.

National Geographic's Man's Conquest of Space, however, was published in 1973 and it certainly saw an American space station in the future. Here, a robot arm pulls a fuel tank in.
