This Volcanic World

Io is a volcanic world but that was unknown until Voyager recorded pictures of the volcanic plumes.

Bonestell's Io looks much like our own moon. Indeed, the two are next to each other in size.

But this moon turns itself inside out. It is the most volcanic place in the Solar System and this is caused by its proximity to Jupiter, which rips and tugs at its insides... gravitationally. Tidal forces make Io erupt again and again. Krypton, the planet Superman came from, tore itself apart.

The king of the planets looms large, so what is it like in the atmosphere?
