Trip to Another Moon?
Phobos and Deimos are the unsung destinations of NASA's revamped vision for space exploration. Mars is always on tongue of the public as the logical destination after the Moon, but a trip to Phobos and Deimos will almost certainly be a prelude to landing on Mars- in much the same way Apollo VIII was a prelude to the Moon before Apollo XI landed on it.
The ship that will explore the Mars system was envisioned by Bonestell, Von Braun and Ley in is being built in Earth orbit. From The Exploration of Mars (1956), the Mars trip is about to begin. The Galapagos Islands are visible under its starboard wing. |
