Anticipating the Age of Sputnik...

Here is Rolf Klep's diagram of a hypothetical multi-stage rocket, painted in the early 1950s. Around this time, Korolev and his team began putting together the R-7 Semyorka ICBM, which would launch Sputnik.

NASA and the Soviet space program both prepared similar multi-stage rockets.
