In the 1860s the United States of America was at war with itself. Or, it was at war with a new nation, the
Confederate States of America. It was a war of unity vs. freedom, of two opposing forces of state and federal.
Federal won. The South sang Dixie in all their major battles and it became the anthem of the Confederacy.
